Denmark placed 5th after great win over Spain

Denmark won fifth place at EHF M18 EURO 2016 in Croatia after 28:24 (11:9) win against Spain.

Fifth place match was very tight for the most of first half. Teams were changing in one goal lead but in the end Denmark prevailed and won first half with two goal difference.

Denmark started better in second half which allowed them to have five goal lead after just a few minutes of play. Spain couldn’t close the gap so fifth place in the end went to Denmark.

Stefan Madsen, DEN (coach)

“We are happy! We came here to develop players, to give them experience in this international matches. We saw what it takes to play at this level and of course we are sad and disappointed that we didn’t make it to the semifinal, we were so close. It cost us a lot of physical and mental strength. Of course I’m happy that boys managed to stick together, work as a team and as individuals. When we get back home to Denmark we can look back to this Championship, we lost just one game and be satisfied with the way we performed here. ”

Nicklas Graugard Nielsen, DEN (player)

“I think we had really good year, we played well and I’m happy with result. Today we had really good defense and scored more, I had few good saves so won in the end.”

Daniel Sanchez Nieves Fernandes, ESP (coach)

“I think today we were tired and Denmark played very well. We are not disappointed with final result. Our players have grown up with this Championship and we saw that we can fight with almost every team but we have to work hard whole year to improve our performance.”

Jaime Gallardo Nieto, ESP (player)

“I think could have done much more than sixth place. In first round we lost with only two goals against France, and in Main Round we lost both matches by one goal. We did a good job but I think we can do better. We are not happy with this result but at least we qualified for next World and Euro.”
